Presse a Iniezione per la Produzione di Tappi

From injection presses to perfect caps: the evolution of technology in plastic manufacturing

Injection presses for cap production are some of the key machinery for industries involved in mass production of plastic products.

They are, in fact, precise, automated plants that enable the production of a large number of parts in a quick time. Let’s take a closer look at what they are, their characteristics, what they are used for, and why they are so important for those who produce plastic caps.

What are injection presses?

Injection presses are machines used primarily in the plastics industry. They can heat plastic polymers and melt them, and with a variety of standard or customized molds, they can produce identical products with the desired shape.

They are precise machines that operate on two levels:

  • injection unit, in which the material is heated to melting temperature (and is, indeed, injected into the mold)
  • clamping unit, which keeps the press closed during casting and gives the desired shape

In terms of components, however, injection molding machinery consists of:

  • injection piston
  • heating chamber
  • molds
  • extractors
  • control unit for controls

In recent years, thanks to technological evolution with a constant focus on Industry 4.0 and automation, injection presses are becoming more and more advanced. Processing is not only very precise, but also safer and faster.

Features and advantages of the injection press for cap production

Plastic is a strong, lightweight and easy to mold and process material. One of the most widely used machines for molding plastic (and caps used in the automotive, food, pharmaceutical, and hydraulics industry) is the injection press. Let’s take a closer look at its features and advantages for the production of plastic caps.

Features

Injection presses used in the production of plastic caps must meet certain characteristics. Specifically, they must be:

  • fast and accurate, to ensure continuous production without waste, snags or slowdowns
  • of low energy consumption, for lower environmental impact and production cost containment

In addition, some components-such as the pressure accumulators for high-speed injection, the water-cooled engine, and the filtration system – ensure system efficiency and longer service life.

Advantages

These machines are extremely precise, fast and allow for rapid processing flow. In fact, plastic polymers are first melted and then injected into the mold, where they take their shape and harden: for a smooth, continuous process.

The advantages of this machine, therefore, can be summarized as follows:

  • continuous, rapid and repeatable production
  • manufacture of a large number of identical parts
  • low production and labor costs
  • high efficiency
  • production of products of different sizes, colors and shapes, including customized ones, and for different industries
  • waste reduction

How does the injection press work and what is it used for?

Proper operation of the injection press involves a series of operations that only a skilled technician can perform perfectly. Let’s take a closer look at how it works and how it produces a perfect cap.

The operation of injection presses for cap production

To make a plastic cap with an injection press, plastic material must be poured into the machinery, which will be heated and then injected at high speed into the mold, shaping the plastic. The mold will open only after the operation is completed, which is when the plastic has hardened.

The steps of the process, then, include:

  • Material loading: plastic granules are placed inside the appropriate cylinder.
  • Rotation of material by motor and injection: plastic polymers melt and injectors will fill the molds, respecting the dosages set by the technician. At this stage, the machine maintains pressure, preventing material spillage
  • Cooling: the material hardens in the mold according to the program preset by the technician in charge
  • Mold opening: the mold opens to “eject” the finished product. Usually, the part falls into a special container and remains there until testing, quality control and finishing

The process can take a few seconds if the parts are small, but the processing time can increase depending on the size of the product to be made.

What is the injection press used for in the cap manufacturing industry

This machine enables delicate manufacturing to be carried out in automation with great precision and speed. The steps in the manufacturing process that we have summarized above thanks to the machine are fast and allow for the production of many of the same parts.

A continuous production that could not happen with manual production, for which much more time would be needed (not to mention that identical pieces could not be obtained).

With injection presses, the production of BMP TAPPI caps is precise and “unlimited”

As we have seen, injection molding machines improve production time, reducing waste and enabling the production of a large number of plastic caps.

In BMP TAPPI every day, 24h24h, more than 120 injection presses are in operation for mass production of standard or customized caps (with specific shape and color, for example) according to customer requirements. In fact, we provide services such as: design activities, ad hoc mold making and related molding, also evaluating among different types of plastic materials, including sustainable ones.

We have chosen to invest in state-of-the-art machinery to ensure an efficient and smooth production, capable of guaranteeing the fulfillment of orders on time. In this way, the creation of plastic caps is virtually unlimited because we can produce large numbers, exporting our products all over the world.
